It is a country with an incredible history of dynastic rule, which was eventually replaced by communist domination and closed to the outside world for many years. However, modern day China has advanced far from the image of uniformly clothed peasant workers on bicycles.
The capital city, Beijing, features royal gardens, ancient architecture and modern structures. As host of the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing's tourism industry has come in leaps and bounds in recent months. It is the gateway to the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City is popular with history lovers for the controversial Tiananmen Square and with spiritual interests for the Temple of Heaven.
On the ancient and mysterious Silk Road, Xian was once the capital of 13 dynasties. Hundreds of palaces and temples were built here, including the famous Tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang, with its 8000 Terracotta Warriors and horses dating back to 210BC. These ranked warrior statues are in immaculate condition, having only been unearthed a few decades ago, and now attract visitors from all over the world.
