Tahiti
From bungalows suspended over the water to suites with every luxury you could ask, your place in paradise awaits.
Many visitors arriving by air into Tahiti's capital city, Papeete, may expect grass huts, pareo-clad natives and the quiet crash of the surf. The Tahiti of legend does live on in this destination, and you'll really feel it when you start to enjoy Papeete's cultural charm, but don't be surprised to discover that Papeete is the international gateway and today is a modern, lively port.
Papeete's 'downtown' displays an amazing collection of boutiques offering shell leis, woven hats, purses and other local handicrafts, while their neighbors sell the latest French fashions. The best way to get there is to hop aboard le truck, the local open-air bus which carries visitors and locals around the island.
You cannot get juice any fresher than in Papeete, and a cool sample is impeccably accompanied by a spot of people-watching from a local sidewalk cafe. In the city's many delicious restaurants, you'll discover that Tahitians enjoy a tantalizing assortment of native, French, Asian, Polynesian and other cuisines, cooked above or below the ground.
Away from Papeete, Tahiti's large island landscape transforms into an array of stunning colors and rugged vistas, all surrounded by crystalline seas and lagoons.
For the adventurous at heart, Tahiti has an abundance of things to keep you occupied. You can improve your handicap at a golf course with majestic backdrops of the island and outer reef. Take a breathtaking helicopter ride to the top of Mount Aorai, Tahiti's second highest peak. Or spend your afternoon trying your hand at big game fishing, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing or water skiing.
To really appreciate what has made this island a legend among pacific island vacations, take a day trip to Matavai Bay, Cook's Monument at Point Venus, the Gauguin Museum, or the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands.
