New Zealand
From the tropical golden sand beaches and bubbling thermal pools of the North Island to the deep dark waters of Milford Sound at the foot of the South Island, New Zealand is a land of wild and vivid contrasts. Its scenery is some of the most dramatic and varied in the world, combining landscapes reminiscent of Switzerland, Norway, Ireland and Yellowstone National Park onto two compact islands.
The people of New Zealand- who call themselves Kiwis are proud and independent. Warm and welcoming, they are also extremely protective of their land and have gone to long measures to maintain a national identity. Kiwis are consummate outdoorsmen, and a love of sports and adventure prevail.
The native peoples, the Maoris (pronounced Maow-Rees), have also worked hard at retaining their heritage and are eager to share their rich history and culture with visitors. While many Maoris have integrated into a modern lifestyle, there are still many opportunities to interact one on one and to learn more about the Maori culture.
